# Ethical and Moral Development: The Cornerstone of UPL

UPL places ethical and moral development at the heart of its spiritual practice, asserting that the cultivation of virtues is essential to the soul's spiritual evolution. This path of ethical evolution is informed by the wisdom of various spiritual traditions, incorporating elements from Buddhism's Eightfold Path, the moral teachings of Jesus, the Islamic emphasis on community and justice, and the guiding principles of Dharma. UPL views ethical living not as a set of rigid prescriptions but as a dynamic, personal journey towards embodying divine qualities in one's life.

UPL speaks to its followers in four ways, and it matters which is which. What UPL holds or believes is its teaching about what is true, and it asks assent of no one. What a follower may do is free: which prayers, which meditation, which texts. What UPL encourages or asks for is the ethical life, in compassion, giving, learning and care for the Earth; a follower sets out to live it, and falling short is part of the journey and not the breaking of a rule.

There are a few things UPL asks without exception, because someone would otherwise be harmed. A follower who is ill never relies on spiritual or alternative remedies alone. No one is pressed, shamed or frightened into belief. Compassion is owed to every person, whether or not they believe. No one's suffering is read as the wages of their past. And because we learn, UPL and its followers evaluate their stance and correct it when the evidence asks for it.
