# Inclusive Family Structures and Innate Goodness

UPL recognises diverse family structures, and holds that every person is born with an innate disposition towards goodness.

Several traditions teach this trust in what a person is at birth. Seicho-No-Ie teaches that every person is in reality a child of God, already perfect. Islam calls this inborn nature Fitrah, the natural constitution on which God created all people. The Hebrew Bible says that humankind is made in the image of God. Mahayana Buddhism speaks of Buddha-nature, the potential for awakening in every being, which is not a soul and which Buddhists understand in more than one way. UPL says it in its own words: each of us is light from the source.

Goodness that is inborn does not depend on the shape of the family a person is born into or chooses. A family of any form can nurture it.
