# Respect for the Wisdom of World Traditions

UPL honours enlightened figures and appreciates wisdom from diverse religious and philosophical traditions.

Seicho-No-Ie teaches that all religions emanate from one universal God, and this is UPL's own starting point. Islam honours a long line of prophets before Muhammad and values their moral and spiritual guidance.

Other traditions come near to this without saying the same thing. A hymn of the Rig Veda says that to what is One the sages give many names; it speaks of the gods of its own tradition, and later readers have heard in it a word about all religions. The Buddha compared his teaching to a raft, made for crossing over and not for holding on to.

UPL does not claim that the traditions all teach the same thing, or that each would accept this view of itself. It holds that each carries light, and it learns from each with respect for what that tradition says in its own terms.
