Buddhist Meditation Practices
UPL followers can incorporate various forms of Buddhist meditation into their spiritual practice. These practices, focusing on mindfulness, compassion, and understanding the impermanence of life, align with UPL’s own emphasis on the same qualities and on spiritual evolution.
Two practices are the usual place to begin. In mindfulness of breathing a person sits and knows each breath as it comes in and as it goes out. The Buddha taught it in sixteen steps as a path to liberation, and not as a way to relax. In the cultivation of love a person wishes happiness and safety to all beings without exception. The familiar method of extending that wish by stages, to oneself, a friend, a stranger and an opponent, comes from a later commentary.
