Buddha and the Path to Enlightenment
Buddha’s enlightenment and teachings provide insights into the nature of suffering, the impermanence of life, and the pathway to enlightenment through mindfulness, ethical conduct, and compassion. His emphasis on the way all things arise in dependence on one another, and on personal spiritual development, complements the core principles of UPL.
In his first discourse he set out four noble truths: that there is suffering, that it has an origin, that it can cease, and that there is a path to its ceasing. That path has eight parts and is a middle way between indulgence and self-mortification. He taught mindfulness of breathing as a path to liberation, and the cultivation of love for all beings. He asked that a teaching be tested and not simply accepted, and spoke of his own as a raft, to be used and then set down.
