Guru Nanak and the One Light in All

Guru Nanak (1469 to 1539) is honoured as the first of the Sikh Gurus. The Sikh scripture, in which his hymns are gathered, opens by naming one creator, and it teaches that the one Light is within all, so that no one is to be judged by class or standing. Sikh tradition gathers his teaching into three: remember the divine Name, earn an honest living, and share what you have. The langar, the free kitchen where all sit and eat together, is traditionally traced to him, and seva, selfless service, remains central to Sikh life. His joining of devotion, equality and service reflects UPL’s emphasis on unity, ethical living and community.
